Keith C. Furman, Ph.D., has more than 33 years of professional experience, including 6 years as a Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a wide variety of “Complex Biotech” genetically-engineered recombinant protein, DNA & protein purification/folding inventions, having examined over 150 U.S. patents. These included genetically engineered or isolated protein 100 amino acids long or longer – anything from AIDS antigens, to recombinant spider silk, to paralytic neurotoxins of mollusks, to human growth hormone, to bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs), to sweet proteins, to cancer treatments, to blood proteins of all types, to various specific enzymes, and etc. as well as their DNA, methods of production, etc.
Did we mention that Albert Einstein was a Patent Examiner (called “Patent Clerks” in those days) when he published his seminal papers in 1905 that rocked the world? Of course, Keith is no Einstein. Just saying… Keith did feel that he learned more in just his first two as a Patent Examiner than in all of graduate school.
Keith received a BS from Florida Southern College (’81) and a MS & PhD from the University of Maryland (’85 & ’88) in a biological science (technically, horticulture (post-harvest physiology)) studying “The Effect of Aging on Mitochondrial Proteins in Germinating Soybean Embryonic Axes“, i.e., mitochondrial protein biochemical analysis & the problem of seed vigor and aging in seeds.
A coursework emphasis was obtained in molecular genetics, physiology, and biochemistry totaling of 91 semester hours in hard science and basic research-related courses, including molecular genetics, nucleic acids, biochemistry, plant biochemistry, organic chemistry, plant physiology, statistical analysis, & etc. out of 201 total undergraduate and graduate semester hours.
